Sam Enthoven is coming!! 

The author Sam Enthoven is coming to The Ravensbourne School on Wednesday the 4^th of February to give a presentation to our Year 8 and 9 students.

Holocaust Memorial Day

Today, 27th January 2015, is Holocaust Memorial Day.  The Holocaust was the mass murder of six million Jewish people and millions of other people in the lead up to and during the Second World War.  The killings were organised by the German Nazi party, led by Adolf Hitler.  Most people were killed because they belonged to certain racial or religious groups that the Nazis wanted to wipe out. This type of killing is called genocide.

Holocaust Memorial Day is a time to remember, reflect and learn from the past and realise that genocide does not take place on its own, but is a steady process which can start if discrimination, racism and hatred are not checked and prevented.

The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust has created a list of books especially written for young people that deal with the subject of the Holocaust.  They include the Morris Gleitzman series ‘Once’ ‘Now’, ‘Then’ and ‘After’; The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne and The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank.  All of these books and more are available to borrow from the Discovery Library.  For the full book list go to http://hmd.org.uk/resources/books-young-people.

Guess Who's Reading Competition

We are launching a new and exciting competition in the Library called 'Guess Who's Reading?'.  All year groups are welcome to enter.  Seven members of staff at TRS were photographed reading.  If you can guess all seven you will win a prize!

Winners of the Christmas 'Take a Risk' free prize draw

Over 200 students took a risk and a borrowed a 'Take a Risk' book at the end of last term.

157 Questionnaires were successfully completed and prizes given, as well as 45 spot prizes.  All entries were then put forward for the free prize draw.

Library Lessons - Mapping the Empire

We offer a variety of Library lessons across all departments.  They are popular with the students, who tell us that they enjoy the opportunity to work independently and as part of a team.

‘Mapping the Empire’ is a History Library lesson, where the students are asked to pick a country that was part of the British Empire and produce a fact file on that country.  When the fact file is completed, the student places a dot on the map showing the location of their country.  This allows the class to consider the location, spread and importance of countries in the British Empire.  The teacher is able to take the map back to the classroom at the end of the session to use as a resource throughout the unit.

This term Mr Langley's Year 8 history class provided some colourful and informative fact files for display outside the Discovery Library.
