We love this beautiful book, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charles Mackesy, which we have bought for our Lower School Library.  If you can't wait to read the book then watch on BBC 1 on Christmas Eve or listen now on BBC Sounds.

Crisis at Christmas 2022

Thousands of people will be homeless this Christmas.

Each year, some of the staff at TRS choose to make a donation to Crisis instead of sending Christmas cards. This year the total raised is £250 which will pay for more than 8 places.

Guardian Labs have put together this very interesting 50-year timeline of Crisis at Christmas.

Congratulations Argentina

Argentina won the World Cup 2022.  Lots has been said about Messi and we would like to point to our blog post of 30 November 2021.  We recommend all the books in Tom and Matt Oldfield's fantastic series Ultimate Football Heroes.

Textiles Club

 Our fantastic Textiles Club members have come up trumps again!  They have put together another lovely display, in the Discovery Library, of the tabards they created and the books that inspired them.  This time the theme is fairies and nymphs!!

Anti-Bullying Week 2022

 Monday 14 - Friday 18 November 2022 is Anti-Bullying Week.  

The theme this year is Reach Out, and the aim is to inspire people to do something positive to counter the harm and hurt that bullying causes.  We hope our pop-up display in the Discovery Library is a good example of Reaching out!

World Cup 2022, LGBT and Rebels

We have some great book displays in our Libraries.  In the Discovery Library we are celebrating the 2022 World Cup and also supporting the LBGT community.  

In the War Memorial Library, we are thinking about all things rebellious.

 

Diverse Book Awards winner

 

So pleased to hear this wonderful, magical book Skin of the Sea by the Nigerian/Welsh writer Natasha Bowen has won the best YA Book category of the Diverse Book Awards 2022. Our students and staff can find this brilliant book in our Upper School Library.

The Uncommon Reader

 

We adore this lovely gentle read by Alan Bennett.  Led by her yapping corgis to the Westminster mobile library outside Buckingham Palace, the Queen finds herself becoming a regular borrower.  The Library awakens in Her Majesty a passion for reading so great that her public duties begin to suffer. And so, as she devours work by everyone from Hardy to Brookner to Proust to Beckett, her equerries conspire to bring the Queen's literary odyssey to a close.  Our students can find The Uncommon Reader in our Upper School Library.

International Literacy Day

Today, Thursday the 8th of September, is International Literacy Day.  We are aware, here at The Ravensbourne School, of how lucky we are to have two beautiful and well stocked Libraries which support our students with their varied literacy needs.

Raymond Briggs

So sad to hear that the author and illustrator of children's books, Raymond Briggs, died today.  Our students will probably remember him best for The Snowman book, which was also made into a beautiful film.

The Hunger Games

Amazingly Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games book was first published in 2008, but the series remains very popular with our students nearly 15 years later.  The first film was released ten years ago, in 2012, which of course reignited interest in the books.  Our students were very excited about the prequel to The Hunger Games, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, published in 2020.  We are pretty sure they will be excited to hear that the film of the book is due to be released in 2023, we know we are!

Marcus Rashford

 

Marcus Rashford MBE, sportsperson, Manchester United & England International Footballer, author and social campaigner is now to become guest editor of a special edition of the Beano comic!!  That is sure to turn out to be a collector's item!

We have his best seller, You Are a Champion, in our Lower School Library along with Matt and Tom Oldfield's book Rashford.  Marcus' new book, You Can Do It, will be on our shelves in September.

Summer Reading Challenge

Libraries across the UK are once again inviting young people to take up the Summer Reading Challenge. You can get involved by joining here. The Reading Agency are teaming up with the Science Museum for a science themed challenge called Gadgeteers. Don't forget to sign up for a summer of reading, discovery and fun!

World Environment Day

The Bromley Boys

Congratulations to Bromley Football Club on their amazing FA Trophy win this weekend.  What a great year to win such a prestigious trophy, 2022 being the 130 year anniversary of the founding of the club. Bromley Football Club are really close to our hearts here at The Ravensbourne School, not only are they our local football club but they have close associations with our own Bromley Football Academy students.  You can read all about Bromley Football Academy here.

We have the brilliant and funny book 'The Bromley Boys' by Dave Roberts, based on the club in their less successful years, in our Upper School Library, for students and staff to borrow.  This great book was also made into a film, released in 2018, which was partly filmed on location in Bromley.

Word of the Week competition

 

So excited that the relaunch of our Word of the Week competition has proved so popular.  So many great words to blog, tweet, and Instagram.

Orpington Literary Festival

We are so lucky to have the Orpington Literary Festival right on our doorstep. 

This ten day celebration of the written and spoken word runs from the 14th - 22nd of May and all the events are FREE.  No booking is required unless specified.

Get cooking

Many of our students enjoy cooking.  We have a lovely range of cookery books in our Libraries to inform and inspire.

We are particularly inspired by Omari McQueen who began cooking at the age of seven and now, at the age of 12, is a vegan chef and entrepreneur who has published cookery books and has his own range of vegan dips!!

Earth Day

Today, Friday 22 April, is Earth Day. Earth Day is an opportunity for people across the globe to come together, not only to celebrate the world, but also to raise awareness about how crucial it is that we take steps now to protect our precious planet.  The theme for Earth Day this year is invest in our planet.  We have some great books in our Libraries to help our students think about how they can take action and help to make a difference.

Revision Resources

A big shout out to our teaching colleagues who have kindly provided us with FREE revision resources for our Year 11 students.  

Students are welcome to pop in at lunch time or after school and help themselves.  They can take the resources away or take advantage of the quiet study space of our War Memorial Library to stay and get some revision done.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Wow, the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 film comes out today, Friday 1 April 2022, and look what just landed in our Lower School Library!

The Sky is Everywhere

Jandy Nelson's brilliant YA book The Sky is Everywhere, which sensitively covers the topic of teenage grief, has now been made into a film airing on Apple TV.  Our students will find the book, along with Jandy's debut novel I'll Give You the Sun, in our Upper School Library.

What a fantastic list of books on the Carnegie shortlist. Especially excited to see local writer Alex Wheatle's Cane Warriors there.

Prize winner

So pleased to announce that one of our Librarians entered a School Library Association competition, and won this great bundle of books for the Discovery Library, and some copies of a comic published by Flying Eye Books for our students to take.

World Book Day 2022

We are so excited about World Book Day 2022 on Thursday the 3rd of March.

Carnegie Shadowing 2022

The Yoto Carnegie Medal shadowing longlist is out.  Some fantastic books on the list, many of which are in our Libraries for students and staff to borrow.

LGBTQI+ History Month 2022

 

It is LGBTQI+ History Month.  Great reading ideas available here from Love Reading 4 Kids and also get inspiration from our lovely displays in both Libraries.

Children's Mental Health Week 2022

 

The theme for Children's Mental Health Week this year is Growth Stories.  Human beings change and grow – we do it all the time and in many ways.  Sometimes we might feel our emotional growth is a bit ‘stuck’ and at these times we need others in our lives to help us to keep growing.   We have some lovely books in our Libraries which depict characters growing emotionally, often with the help of others.  We also have some great non-fiction books on mental health which are worth dipping in to.

Big Garden Birdwatch

 

Many of our students and staff like to watch and feed the birds in their neighbourhoods, and many will be joining in with the Big Garden Birdwatch 2022 this weekend.  We have a variety of lovely bird books in our Libraries, to help with identifying the regulars and maybe even making some unusual sightings.
