Book Displays

Look out for our displays of recommended books in the Discovery and War Memorial Libraries.  Currently, we have a STEM display of books in the War Memorial Library and our ‘new books’ display containing the latest titles in the Discovery Library.

Our recent book display themes have included Halloween and Remembrance.  These have been great in encouraging students to borrow books that they might not normally choose to read for pleasure.

How ready are you to ‘Take a Risk’?

The Library’s ‘Take a Risk’ competition is back for Christmas!  Borrow a mystery ‘Take A Risk Book’ fill in the short questionnaire and you will automatically win a prize, and have your name entered into a free prize draw with the chance to win more prizes PLUS spot prizes to be won.  See a Librarian in the Discovery Library for details.

Children's Book Award winners

Frank Cottrell Boyce has won the 2012 Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize for his book The Unforgotten Coat. The book was inspired by a true story follows two brothers from Mongolia who go to school in Bootle, Merseyside, but are forced to return to their homeland.  The author was commissioned to write it by a charity, Reader Organisation, and 50,000 copies were given away free. The Roald Dahl Funny Prize 2012 has been won by Jamie Thomson for Dark Lord The Teenage Years.  The book, which won the funniest book for children aged seven to 14, is about a dark lord who inhabits the body of teenager Dirk Lloyd.  You can find a copy of this book and others by Jamie Thomson in the Discovery Library.

War Memorial Library visits

The school war memorial, initially dedicated to students and staff who gave their lives in the Great War, is situated in the KS4/5 Library; known as the War Memorial Library. It was added to again after World War II.  The war memorial is important to the life of the school and we mention it often.

As the War Memorial Library is for the use of KS4 and 5 students and staff only and we are aware that the KS3 students do not get to see the memorial, a timetable of visits has been arranged for the Year 7 students to visit during Form Time this term.

Remembrance Day – lest we forget

Remembrance Day takes place on 11 November every year in Commonwealth Countries to remember the members of the armed forces who have died since the end of the First World War.  People wear remembrance poppies to show that they have not forgotten those who have died.  The Discovery Library has a special Remembrance display of war time story books for you to borrow.  Tell us what you have read and whether you enjoyed it!  You may also like to write a review recommending the book to others.

Carve out time for a book!

Why not enjoy a ‘spooky’ read this half term?  Come and have a look at our Halloween display in the Discovery library and borrow a scary book!  We have lots of other good reads available in our ‘new books’ section and throughout the library.
