Roald Dahl Day

Today is Roald Dahl day and this year marks 100 years since his birth.  Roald Dahl, much loved author and storyteller, created witty and wonderfully eccentric stories with unforgettable characters, which are loved by everyone.  His previous jobs included a pilot for the RAF and Shell Executive in Africa.

Welcome Back!

We would like to welcome back all the TRS students and staff and welcome all those who are new to the school - we hope that you enjoy your time here! 

We hope you had a great summer - we have received some postcards telling us what you were reading and look forward to displaying these. 

We have a great collection of fiction and non-fiction to browse and borrow in our Libraries, with Librarians on hand to help with homework and recommend a great read - just ask!

For the KS3 students, the Discovery Library is open before and after school as well as at lunch time for quiet study. For KS4 students, the War Memorial Library is open at lunch time and for Post 16 students, it is available to use throughout the day including morning break.

Look out for our library competitions, including our weekly Word of the Week competition, with loads of great prizes to be won. We have changing book displays and displays of new books to encourage reading for pleasure. We are happy to consider buying any books that we do not currently have – just ask! There are suggestion boxes too for any comments or suggestions you may have.

Summer in the Libraries and Anthony Horowitz A Levels Results Day Tweet!

We hope you are enjoying your Summer holidays and look forward to receiving postcards telling us what you have been reading, whether you have been away or are enjoying a staycation!

Summer is always a very busy time in the libraries, as this is when we have a good sort out.  Ms Roberts has been key wording books, creating new Library lessons and tidying both the Discovery and War Memorial Libraries so everything is spick and span ready for the new academic year.

Today is 'A' Level results day and we hope that all our students have obtained the results they wanted.  Acclaimed children's author, Anthony Horowitz tweeted the following message:

Year 7 Spelling Bee Competition - Winner Announced!

The final of the Spelling Bee was held on Monday in the Year 7 Assembly.  Congratulations go to George F in 7JS, who was the overall winner and the winning word was ‘armistice’!

Congratulations as well go to the other nominated students Callum M, Alfie S, Tristan O, Jamie B, Joshua L, Isabelle E-H, Louis O and Rosanna S.

Post-a-Read 2016!

We would love you to send us a postcard of what you are reading over the summer! It doesn’t matter where the post card is from, Bromley or Borneo, Luton or Las Vegas, as long as you tell us what you are reading.  All entrants will have their postcard displayed and will win a prize!

Got Caught Reading 2016

Over 5 days, we gave 5 different teachers disposable cameras and asked them to take 5 pictures of their students reading!  We had a great selection of readers from Year 7 to Year 13 and have created an amazing collage of all the photographs, which is on display outside the Discovery Library.

The students who were photographed received achievement points and the following 8 students were winners in the free prize draw:

Somme Centenary and The Lord of the Rings

On Friday, 1 July, we commemorated the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, which was fought between July and November 1916.  Described as one of the defining events of the First World War, when the battle was halted more than 1 million Commonwealth, French and German soldiers had been wounded, captured or killed.  The War Memorial in the War Memorial Library at TRS is dedicated to staff who gave their lives in the Great War.

Author JRR Tolkien was among those who took part in the Somme.  He was a signaller in the Lancashire Fusiliers and two of this best friends were killed in the battle.  His epic fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings was inspired by his experiences at the Somme.  You can borrow all three volumes, The Fellowship of the Ring, Two Towers and Return of the King from the Discovery Library.

Other great novels inspired by their author’s direct experience of war, including Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemmingway and All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, are available to borrow from the War Memorial Library.
