Ursula Le Guin, acclaimed American
Science Fiction writer, died this week at the age of 88. She has influenced
writers such as Margaret Attwood and Neil Gaiman, and wrote about a boy wizard
who goes to a school for wizards long before J K Rowling’s Harry Potter series. A new
copy of Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea saga, including A Wizard of Earthsea, is available to borrow from the Discovery
Library.
Other author anniversaries include Scottish Poet Robert Burns born 25th January 1759 and one of the most
important modernist authors Virginia Woolf born 25th January
1882. You will find poetry by Robert
Burns and novels by Virginia Woolf including Mrs Dalloway, To The
Lighthouse and Orlando in the War
Memorial Library.

Take A Risk - Free Prize Draw winners
Did you Take a Risk at Christmas? Lots of TRS and EPHS students did by entering our ever popular Take a Risk competition at the end of
last term.
187 questionnaires were
successfully completed and 59 spot prizes were given out. All entries were then put forward to our free
prize draw and the following winners were presented with their prizes at

Writing Competitions - 500 Words and Write It 2018!
500 Words
The BBC Radio 2 500 words story writing competition is
back! It is open to anyone aged 13 or
under. To enter you simply need to write
an original short story of no more than 500 words about anything you like and submit
your story online!
Get your entries in by 7 pm on Thursday, 22nd
February. Prizes include Chris Evan’s
height (6ft 2”) in books plus this year the winners will get to ride in Chitty
Chitty Bang Bang and take tea on the River Thames on the Queen’s royal barge
Gloriana.

Write It 2018
Do you love food and enjoy writing? If yes, why not enter the Write It 2018 competition, run by the Guild of Food Writers and Pink Lady Apples?
To celebrate 10 years of the competition, you are invited to
write a story of between 500 and 750 words on the theme of food and
celebration. The competition is open to
young people aged between 11 and 18 years and the closing date for entries is 30th
April. If your story is chosen, you will be named Guild of Food Writers Young Food Writer of the Year and win prizes that money cannot buy!
