Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2018

The acclaimed debut novel by Angie Thomas, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas has won the overall winner of the Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2018.

Also nominated on the shortlist for the Carnegie Children's Book Award, the novel, inspired by the black lives matter campaign and set in America, follows the story of a teenager, Starr, who having witnessed the fatal shooting of her friend by a white police officer, is drawn into campaigning for justice.


The Hate U Give is available to borrow from the War Memorial Library.

The Henrietta Branford Writing Competition 2018

The Henrietta Branford Writing Competition 2018  is an annual competition for young people, which runs alongside The Branford Boase Award for new authors of a children's book and their editors.  

Open to any young writers under the age of 19, entrants must complete a story begun by last year’s winner of the Branford Boase Award, M G Leonard for Beetle Boy.

The Branford Boase Award long list includes The One Memory of Flora Banks by Emily Barr and A Girl Called Owl by Amy Wilson, both of which are available to borrow from the Discovery and War Memorial Libraries.  The shortlist is announced on 2nd May and the winner in July 2018.

CILIP's Carnegie Medal shortlist 2018 announced

CILIP's Carnegie Medal is awarded each year for an outstanding book for children and young people.

The 2018 shortlisted books are:

• Wed Wabbit by Lissa Evans

• After the Fire by Will Hill

• Where the World Ends by Geraldine McCaughrean

• Rook by Anthony McGowan

• Release by Patrick Ness

• Saint Death by Marcus Sedgwick

• The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

• Beyond the Bright Sea by Lauren Wolk

World Book Day 2018 celebrations

This year's TRS and Eden Park High School World Book Day celebrations took place on Thursday 8th March, with staff and Year 7 dress up, Drop Everything and Read and Library competitions.

As well as distributing book tokens to students via form tutors, creating World Book Day bookmarks and displays, the Librarians worked with the Geography department to deliver some excellent Library Lessons on banned books.  Adapted for Year 7s from last year's highly successful lesson, the students broke into groups and, following discussions facilitated by the Librarian and teacher, had to suggest reasons why and where in the world particular children's books were banned.

WRITING COMPETITION:

The Wicked Young Writers Awards 

Writing subject: The organisers want your writing to be personal to you so you can write on whatever topic you like.

Length: 750 words

Open to: 5 to 25 year olds

Prizes: All winners will win four tickets to see the London production of WICKED at the Apollo Victoria Theatre and an opportunity to meet cast members after the show along with an exclusive backstage tour.  Plus loads more prizes.

Deadline: Monday, 12th March 2018 - so you haven't got long!

CHILDREN'S BOOK AWARDS:

The Blue Peter Book Awards, sponsored by The Book Trust, celebrate children's books published in the last two years.  Announced live on Blue Peter on World Book Day, the winner for best story went to Cressida Cowell for The Wizards of Once.  Best book with facts went to Real-Life Mysteries by written Susan Martineau and illustrated by Vicky Barker.

The Federation of Children's Book Groups are inviting you to vote for your favourite shortlisted children's book as part of their Book Awards 2018, the only awards voted for entirely by children.  To vote, go to their website - you have until midday on Friday, 18th May.

Happy World Book Day 2018!

World Book Day  is all about celebrating books and reading, something that we do every day at The Ravensbourne School.

Even though the school is closed due to snow today, we hope you will go ahead and celebrate anyway by finding time in the day to read and enjoy books and even dress up, if you would like to.

Don't forget to swap your World Book Day voucher for a £1 WBD book or spend £1.50 on one of the five fabulous full length teen novels!
